Burning Man Project: Communication Team
Facebook MessagesFor two years, April was the primary responder to all private messages sent to the Burning Man organization through Facebook. Most of the work involved sending people to the right department or directing them to publicly available information regarding ticketing or other questions about attendance. With more than a million followers, we also got our fair share of messages that were critical of the organization. My goal was to handle every message with grace and kindness.

Special ProjectsAt times, I was asked to help with special projects which included creating a presentation for South By Southwest which would explain unique elements of Burning Man culture to those who had never been. I also assisted in 2013 to help explain the event's theme that year: Cargo Cult. I wrote talking points for staff who may be asked about the theme and once we go to the event, I explained it to media there. In this video, I can be found at 37:45 explaining the origin of the term "cargo cult" and then how it related to Burning Man that year for a German television show.

Event Media AssistanceBecause of my public relations background, I was able to assist with media connections while at the Burning Man event in Black Rock City, Nevada. I coordinated media rides on art cars to get them to art installations where they could interview the creators on site. I also assisted with events set up for media to meet with organization leadership as well. Once we got back to San Francisco, I helped track and archive every press mention across all types of media.
